Toga parties are famous worldwide; not only due to the Romans but also in part to John Belushi and his outrageous character is the movie Animal House. Since the days of college parties, Toga costumes have become almost a rite of passage on the college campuses of many schools across the globe.
White does not have to be the color of your toga; it is often the most popular choice because often time’s people with just use a white sheet that they have lying around the house. However, if you don’t have white sheets or if you are interested in putting a bit more style into your toga costume, a fabric store will have the perfect solution.
Toga Costume Basics Are Simple Directions To Follow
When creating your toga costume, remember that the toga itself is long and narrow. This is a basic reason why most sheets don’t work well as there is too match fabric and it is in the wrong shape, you end up carrying a large amount of extra cloth that becomes quite bulky. The second important consideration is if you plan to wear a tunic or long t-shirt under your toga.Â
The creation of the toga costume itself is the same with or without the tunic but you will want to have the tunic on when you are practicing tying your toga costume or it will be more difficult when preparing for the party later.
When buying cloth for your toga, most costume directions advise buying six yards of fabric but that can vary depending on the size of the person wearing the costume. Obviously for a child that measurement would be much smaller. It is best to go about one-yard per foot of height, stopping at six yards maximum.Â
Tying The Male and Female Toga Costume
Once you have purchased your fabric and decided about the tunic, you should begin practicing tying the toga costume. For men, the first step is to pin one end of the toga around your waist. Then you will want to wrap it at least one full circle around your waist, having the length hang down to your knees. After wrapping it at least one time around the waist, pin the toga again at the waistline to insure that it remains in position. Throw the rest of the fabric up over one shoulder and you now have your completed toga in place and ready to go.
For women, creating a toga costume is a bit more complicated but easily done. To begin, pin the material just under the armpits, making sure that your fabric hangs down to the general knee area. Wrap the fabric at least one full circle around your body and pin into place again, making sure that the fabric is held tightly. Throw the remaining fabric over your shoulder and your costume is complete. It should be noted that there are many variations of women’s toga costumes and a simple online search can reveal different options if you are looking for something a bit sexier than the traditional toga costume.
