410The Magic Of Believing In THE Red And White Santa Costume
posted by julia on August 23rd, 2007
There are few suits in America that are as instantly recognized as THE red and white suit worn by a certain Jolly Ol’ Elf. As amazing as commercialism continually proves itself to be, Santa Claus has to be one of the greatest victories in the American pop culture.
Any man dressed in a red and white Santa costume can calm misbehaving children, create havoc in department stores and keep children awake and peering out their bedroom windows until all hours of the night. Even NASA has a web site that allows children all across the globe to track Santa on his yearly flight.
It is just a fact, Santa is a jolly Ol’ elf and everyone loves and adores him. Why anyone would want to go and mess with such a fine character image as Santa’s I do not know, which is what brings me to the big question; why the Santa costume at a Halloween party?
So Why Would Someone Dress In A Santa Costume On Halloween?
I have often wondered why someone would use a Santa costume as a Halloween costume. Not only does it lack imagination but it also seems to toy with an icon that is better left alone, as far as options for Halloween costumes are concerned. The idea of Santa standing in the corner of a Halloween party, sipping on a “cold one” somehow seems sacrilegious to me, I don’t know why but it does.
Now, I understand that people get busy and planning a Halloween costume does not reach the top of everyone’s “to do” list but Santa Claus, that choice just screams desperate to me. If you want to dress up in a Santa costume, wait until December and volunteer at a homeless shelter or local kids club; keep him out of the Halloween parties.
If Your Only Option Is The Santa Costume, Please Don’t Wear It To My Party
Maybe I don’t like seeing the Santa costume out of its element; snowy streets, reindeer, sack of toys, elves and a sleigh. It just seems somewhat inappropriate to have Santa standing next to Frankenstein, Ozzy Osborne and the Scandinavian Beer Wench, chatting up a storm and knocking back a few brews.
You have to admit, it is a little off from young children lining up at the local department store to sit on his lap and whisper their Christmas wishes. Call me old fashion but the Santa costume should remain stored in the attic until December rolls around, then by golly be the jolly Ol’ elf any time your heart desires.
