A penguin costume is actually one of the easiest costumes of all that you can make for your child, and so if you are struggling for an idea in terms of their Halloween costume, especially if they are younger, then this is definitely one that you are going to want to consider. Not only is a penguin costume incredibly easy to make, but you need only a few things to make it as well and so it is very cheap to create.
Materials for the Penguin Costume
For one of the easiest and most affordable types of the penguin costume, you need a grocery bag, orange construction paper, scissors, a black marker, and string. You can generally get all of these at your local arts and crafts store, however if you have dollar stores located in your area you should try those as well.

Now comes the actual construction process, and the first thing that you want to do is slit the front of the grocery bag from top to bottom, cut a neck hole in the bottom of the bag and cut wing shaped flaps into the sides. Then you want to color the bag black and white so that it resembles a penguin.
Form a cone out of a triangular piece of the orange construction paper and staple it together to secure it, and then punch a hole in each side. Next you take a 12 inch piece of string and put it through each hole. Place the cone over your child’s nose like a beak, and then tie the strings together at the back of your head.
Another way to make a penguin costume, one which is more suited to older children, is to have them wear black pants, a very large black sweatshirt and black mittens or gloves. Then you need white felt, orange felt, glitter, safety pins and scissors to complete the rest.
What you do is cut an oval out of the white felt to cover the tummy of the child, and then make some penguin feet out of the orange felt. Cut out a long strip of yellow felt next, and it should be roughly about the width and length of an average sized scarf. Make fringes on the ends of the scarf, and cover with glitter.
Then all you need to do to finish it off is pin the feet on the bottom front of the child’s pants so that they cover the tops of their shoes, put on a coat and the large black sweatshirt over the coat to make them look like a chubby little penguin. Finally, pin the white oval on the front of their shirt, wrap the scarf around their neck, and add any final touches that you like.
