It was the era that celebrated the spinning mirrored ball, colorful lighted shows on illuminated dance floors and white leisure suits with black shirts and lots of gold chains on men.  John Travolta is remembered for his role as Tony Manero, the disco king that wore platform shoes and a white disco suit.  This is the most powerful image of disco costumes today.

Even now, over thirty years later, most of America recognizes the Saturday Night Fever stance with one hand high in the air and the other thrown behind, with a hip thrust out and legs spread slightly apart.  The dancing moves with a hand going up and down across the body are all signals of the hot disco nights of the late seventies and early eighties.

Disco costumes are still very big in the costume industry often rented or bought by people who are attending a party and other function that requires a costume.  Travolta’s character and strong wardrobe produced an icon for the costume world, disco is here to stay.

Women’s Disco Costumes Have A Wide Range Of Variety

For women, swirling dresses with off the shoulder necklines were both seductive and subtle.  For the braver souls of the disco era, hot pants in bright colored spandex with a stretch spandex top provided enough a fit so tight that the body was most perfectly molded within the clothing.  These Lycra catsuits with platform heals and large Afros were a vision to be sure.

Considering that so much of disco was really encased in the images of John Travolta and the Saturday Night Fever movie, a bit of research of the movie itself or watching one of the many spoofs that exist will give you great ideas on a disco costume.

Keep in mind that the female clothes made of such things as leopard skin prints, stretch halter jumpsuits, white clothes that would glow under the different light shows in different clubs and the gold lame blouses and skirts were all popular disco wear and make great costume ideas.  Many of the disco clothes that women wore were adaptations from things that might be found in a modern dance wear closet, the tighter and more fitted the better for most of the disco queens.

Anything satin that could reflect the lights and mirrors was popular for men and women as were the platform shoes to extend the length of the leg and make the disco dancer appear longer and leaner.  Disco was an era of sexy movement and high fashion statements, remembering those key points in planning your disco costume is sure to lead you in the right direct.
